Photos don't need to be razor sharp

1/29/2026

shaprness has its place

Lately I’ve been thinking about how obsessed the photography world has become with razor‑sharp everything. Don’t get me wrong—sharpness has its place. But it’s not the soul of a photograph.

not technically perfect

Some of my favourite images aren’t technically perfect at all. They’re the ones where the moment was real, the story was unfolding, and the emotion was impossible to fake. A little blur, a little grain, a little imperfection… sometimes that’s exactly what makes a photo feel alive.

catch the magic happening right in front of us

Photography isn’t a contest of pixels. It’s a way of seeing, feeling, remembering. When we chase only sharpness, we risk missing the magic happening right in front of us.

Welcoming Home: The value of In-Home Newborn Sessions

1/17/2026

capturing those first few days of a new life right at home.

As a photographer, some sessions feel truly historical, and my recent newborn shoot was exactly that. This beautiful new arrival holds the special title of being the very first baby born at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg this year! It was an honor to document their arrival not in a studio, but right where their journey as a family begins: their home.

The In-Home Experience: A Natural Environment

In-home newborn photography is all about embracing comfort and capturing genuine, unscripted moments. My philosophy centers on minimal intrusion and maximum authenticity.
  • Baby's Natural Rhythm: I work entirely around your newborn's schedule. There's no rushing, only patience, allowing the baby to feed, sleep, and just be in their natural environment. The result is relaxed, happy photos that reflect the reality of those precious first days.
  • Comfort & Ease: Parents can relax, change outfits easily, and use the nursery for feedings without stress. The images capture you exactly where you spend most of your time—cuddling on the couch or rocking in their new room.

A Story of Connection: Welcoming Everyone In

While the baby is the star of the show, in-home sessions are designed to welcome the whole family into the frame.
  • Parental Love: We concentrate on the quiet interactions: the gentle touch of a hand, the proud look on a new father's face, a mother's loving gaze. These interactions create powerful, emotional photographs you’ll treasure forever.
  • Sibling Moments: If older siblings are involved, the home setting helps them feel comfortable and included. We capture their curiosity and burgeoning relationships, creating cherished memories of the whole family unit.

It was a privilege to document this momentous occasion for such a lovely family. Capturing life as it happens, right at home, provides timeless memories that will be cherished for generations.

what to wear for a winter photo session by catsmac photography - cobourg

Staying Cozy & Stylish: The Ultimate Guide to Winter Photo Session Outfits

Winter photoshoots are magical, with a serene, often snowy, backdrop that is a photographer's dream. The key to making these images truly shine is ensuring everyone is comfortable and warm, so their natural joy can take center stage. Here are my top tips for what to wear for your outdoor winter family session.

layers, layers, layers

The golden rule of winter photography is layering. This isn't just about staying warm; it adds wonderful dimension and texture to your photos.

  • Visible Layers: Add insulating mid-layers like chunky knit sweaters, cardigans, or flannel shirts. A stylish outer layer, such as a sharp wool coat or a structured puffer jacket, can be a great focal point and easily removed for variety.
  • Hidden Layers: Start with a thin, moisture-wicking base layer, like thermals or fleece-lined tights, which can be easily hidden under your main outfit without adding bulk.

complementing colours and textures

With a neutral background of snow and bare trees, you can't go wrong with either classic neutrals or a rich pop of color.

Color Palette / Description / Why it Works
Cozy Neutrals Creams, beige, charcoal gray, and tan. Timeless, elegant, and keeps the focus on your family's faces.
Jewel Tones Deep burgundy, forest green, navy blue, and mustard yellow. These rich, vibrant colours offer a beautiful contrast against a snowy landscape.
Plaid Accents Incorporate classic plaid in scarves or shirts, using the colours from the pattern to guide the rest of the family's solid-coloured outfits. Adds visual interest without being overwhelming.
Avoid overly bright or neon colours, as they can be distracting and unflattering.

don't forget accessories and footwear

Accessories are both functional and fashionable in winter photos.

  • Accessories: Hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens add personality and can be easily swapped in and out for different looks. A cute blanket can also serve as a cozy prop.
  • Footwear: Choose practical, warm, and waterproof boots that are comfortable for walking in the snow. Knee-high or ankle boots are great stylish options that work well with thick socks hidden underneath.

Ultimately, the most important tip is to wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. When you feel good, you look good, and those genuine emotions translate beautifully into timeless photographs.

playfulness and natural interaction

Even though the air was crisp, their energy brought warmth to our engagement session. I just loved their playfulness and their natural interaction allowed for some beautiful candid shots that showed their personalities.
